Art Block Zine

Picture
Art Block Zine is a DSTL Arts program that produces monthly, community-based zine-making workshops, and a biannual print-zine anthology by the same name. Our Art Block Zine–Editorial Board also manages our e-zine.

The Art Block Zine–Editorial Board meets on a weekly basis and reviews all submissions for content, theme, and artistic quality. The work our student-led editorial board seeks to publish should activate our five senses while inspiring us with a sense of vulnerability: a sense of realness. We hope to connect with well-developed stories and artwork.

Twice a year, our editorial board chooses a new theme for the zine. The current theme, and submission period, can be found below.

Please note: submissions are open year-round, but there are deadlines for being featured in the upcoming issue. Please review our submission period section below for upcoming deadline information. Submissions accepted online and in-person at workshops only, and must follow our guidelines.

For any questions regarding the biannual Art Block Zine, feel free to contact us by email at ArtBlockZine@DSTLArts.org.

Fitting in - Following the leader

We seek visual art, stories, poetry, photography, and comics that demonstrate a strong sense of "Fitting in - Following the leader."

If you need inspiration, feel free to create art in response to the following quotes:

“This is the lesson that history teaches: repetition.”
– Gertrude Stein

"We're here to tell you all your false idols are just pretenders/ They're corporation slaves indentured to all the lenders."
-Killer Mike

What are some things you/others have done to fit in? Whose image is it you/others seek to fit? Do you/others follow something without knowing? Are there people following you? What do you do then?

As always, share your responses by creating art through either photography, comics, poetry, flash fiction/creative nonfiction (500 words or less), or fine art/illustration. We look forward to reviewing your work.

All-Ages Mini-Zine Workshops

Please note: Due to COVID-19 closures, this program is currently postponed. It will resume in Program Year 2021-2022.
Our Editorial Board conducts a community-based, mini-zine making workshop series offered in partnership with several libraries and community spaces throughout Northeast, East, and South Los Angeles.

Individuals from various neighborhoods in our community come together and work with our Editorial Board to develop stories, poetry, comics, and illustrations in mini-zines. This workshop series is ongoing, and meets once a month (except for holidays) at various locations in Los Angeles, and these workshops are open to people of all ages, regardless of background. Participants in this workshop are also invited to submit longer works of art to the either our biannual Art Block Zine, Aurtistic Zine, and/or our e-zine.

Follow us on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook for frequent updates about time and location for our upcoming All-Ages Mini-Zine Workshops! Below, you’ll find our current All-Ages Mini-Zine Workshop sites where you can join us on a regular basis.

For any questions regarding the All-Ages Mini-Zine Workshops, feel free to contact us by email at Info@DSTLArts.org.
