Luz Catalina Mireles

Picture
Luz Catalina Mireles is a Xicanx artist who has been a student for DSTL Arts since 2014. Zine making and photography are her biggest contributions all while balancing her community involvement, and school. She is one of our main editors on the Art Block Editoral Board. We conducted interviews within the group to give you a bigger picture of who we are.

Why did you choose to participate in the DSTL Arts program?

I've always been active with arts since I was little. I've been part of programs that incorporate different forms of art. Painting, acting, dancing, music, and writting. The DSTL Arts Program has provided a different outlet for my creative juices. Art Block and DSTL Arts have provided a space for me to be able to focus my energy onto my photography. With each learning experience comes more adventures.
Who are the most influential people in your life?
I would say the most influential person in my life is my mother. No matter what she's always supported me and my crazy ideas. My mother holds a certain type of unconditional love with I could not part from.
My mentors Jennifer and Luis also hold a special place in my heart and have pushed me forward to reaching for my goals. Always lending a helping hands and great advice. They've got me to where I am today as an artist.
Being part of this program has benefitted me in multiple ways. With building my photo profile, building relationships with close friends, and breaking down my introverted walls.
As a growing artist I feel that this program provides a safe space to run free with your creativity and build your confidence. Because no matter what you will always have the support from the group.

Angie Sylvia

Picture
Angie Sylvia is a spoken word poet, who as been a part of the DSTL Arts program since 2014. Published two chapbooks and featured in a couple zines, Angie continues her writing through the program while working and going to school. She was a youth poet ambassador for the year 2015. Now she has become another of our main editors in the Art Block Editoral Board.

Why did you choose to participate in the DSTL Arts program?

The co-founder Jennifer Fuentes had came up to me one day after class when I was in high school. She was my english teacher and I was the ''new kid'' back. I had shared with her that I wanted to be a writer and started my own blog. Then she mention the program and wanted me to join. The next few weeks, I join the classes and realized how much I really do enjoy writing poetry. So, ever since then I've been apart of the program since.
What can people take away from being in the program?
I believe anyone who comes into the program has their own kind of experience and takes something different with them. As for me, I can say I've met great people who taught me how to become a better writer and performer, I was able to publish and sell my work, and I was able to grow in the program.
Who are the most influential people in your life?
The most influential people to me are Jennifer Fuentes the co founder. Every word of advise always helps and inspires me to not only be a better writer but a better person.
